Rookie police officers get parole from the payment officer from the day of hiring and including time spent at the Police Academy. Salary increases occur each year until they reach the rank of first-class constable after four years. Increases are also made for 10 years, 15 years and 20 years of service. Until 1971, the police had grown to 45 police officers, due to the increase in population following the opening of the George Massey Tunnel.
